Full Description

Recent years have seen growing international interest in Arabic literature, and thanks to the availability of high-quality translations the literature of the modern Arab world is accessible today to non-Arabic-speaking readers. Nevertheless, confusion sometimes remains about the ways in which this literature might be read and its place in the international literary system, as well as about its characteristics and development. Drawing on the work of a range of theorists from postcolonial studies, translation studies and the developing study of ‘world literature,’ this course attempts to read modern Arabic literature in an international frame, considering works by Taha Hussein, Naguib Mahfouz, Tayeb Salih and Abdel-Rahman Mounif in addition to contemporary work by Khoury, al-Aswany and al-Aidy, among others. Interest in the modern Arab world is an advantage, but knowledge of Arabic or French is not required.
