Full Description

This course surveys the subjects, styles, and interpretations of mythological subjects in French painting during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and will explore the changing resonances of myth during this tumultuous period. Within the pantheon of Greco-Roman deities and their narratives, certain among them appear more frequently during a given era; these paintings will be analyzed in terms of their iconography and patronage, as well as contemporaneous theoretical and popular understandings of myth, to elucidate the social, political, and artistic utility of these ancient tales. Particular attention will be paid to the work of Antoine Coypel, François Boucher, Jacques-Louis David, Anne- Louis Girodet, Alexandre Cabanel, Gustave Courbet, Edouard Manet, Auguste Renoir, Odilon Redon, and Gustave Moreau. In addition to class lectures there will be visits to the Hôtel de Soubise, the Louvre, and the Orsay Museum.
