Full Description

This class of 10 sessions that last 2 hours enables to discover the history and art in Paris and thereabouts from the origins to the 1789 revolution. The main monuments: le musée du Louvre, la cathédrale Notre-Dame, le château de Versailles will occupy predominant spot in the class without putting aside other monuments that cannot be ignored like La Sainte Chapelle, le Panthéon, le Palais du Luxembourg…).

Some classes will deal with Paris town planning through many significant examples (Marais quarter, la place de la Concorde, Vendôme et des Victoires).

Course Program

  • The origins of Paris: the thermal baths of Cluny, Lutece's bullrings
  • Paris during the Middle Ages: the cradle of Paris (Notre Dame cathedral, the palace of the "City", the Sainte Chapelle)
  • Musée du Louvre: royal proprety (medieval Louvre, the Bourbons enormous design, henri IV, Louis XIII, Louis XIV colonnade, the academics, the painting room)
  • The royal collections at Le Louvre: paintings, French sculptures and art objects…
  • Royal collections (continuing): paintings, foreign sculptures (Italy)
  • The Marais quarter during the XVIIth and XVIII th century: Place des Vosges, Hôtel Carnavalet, Hôtel Soubise etc.
  • Versailles castle under Louis XIV: the big apartments and gardens
  • Versailles casle (continuing): Trianon and Queen Marie-Antoinette's hamlet
  • Some famous monuments in Paris (left bank): St Sulpice Church, Luxembourg Palace (Sénate), the Sorbonne, the Panthéon
  • Town planning and Paris monuments (right bank): Place de la Concorde, Place Vendôme, French Comedy, Palais Royal, Place des Victoires
  • Continuous assessment
