Summary

This course proposes a new approach to the study of the Eighteenth Century in France and England. The phenomenon of art collecting will provide the framework for the study of contemporary art. National differences and societal attitudes, the development of the art market and the establishment of museums will be explored. Particular attention will be given to collectors of note in both countries. Finally the rise of Neo-Classicism, the Grand Tour and the considerable influence of the near and distant past will be considered with regard to patterns of collecting and contemporary artistic styles.
