Full Description

This Topics course provides an introduction to the concepts, theory and practice of women’s role in community building, peacemaking, and conflict resolution. Students will explore the significant impact of female actors on conflict resolution in 12 cases, examining the interplay between local culture and international human rights and humanitarian law. Lack of resources, lack of political will, and entrenched systems of patriarchy increase human rights violations against women in all societies. Conflict situations render women even more vulnerable - to rape as a weapon of war, to increased economic instability and to a general climate of violence that destroys family structures. But conflict also presents an opportunity for women to challenge traditional patriarchy and to push for peace and justice, working across ethnic groups and social classes, and often with the international community to rebuild a more equitable post-conflict society. Students will become familiar with all international and regional legal instruments that concern women in times of conflict, and reflect on strategies to unite all women - grassroots activists and national elites, alike - in the construction of a lasting peace.
