Study Abroad in Paris, France - About the UniversitiesUniversity of Paris-Sorbonne IVThe Sorbonne was founded in 1257 by Robert de Sorbon, who was chaplain to the King of France, Saint Louis. The school first served economically disadvantaged students, and quickly grew to be known as a center of philosophical and political debate. The university was closed during the French Revolution in 1791, and re-opened in 1821. At the close of the 19th century, it was rebuilt on the same site and was called the "New Sorbonne." Today, the Sorbonne is the universal symbol of the French university system, and represents the future of France's intellectual strength. Transcripts are issued by the University of Paris IV - Cours de Langue et Civilisation Française de la Sorbonne, which is recognized by the French Ministry of National Education. Since its inception in 1917, the Cours de Civilisation Française has offered its renowned classes in French language and civilization for international students. Classes are held in Paris's charming Latin Quarter, in the same buildings as French students enrolled at the Sorbonne. This allows students to share their daily lives with those of French students, stimulating a mutual interest in their different languages and cultures. The University of Paris-Sorbonne will issue you an official Student ID Card. This card will give you access to all the university's student services and facilities. Many local businesses also recognize the card for discounts, offering student rates for travel, restaurants, museums, cinemas, books, and other facilities and events. Your Student ID Card will also give you access to the university's restaurants and cafeterias, libraries, as well as the Bibliothèque Nationale and other Parisian libraries.
