Summary

This course will take into consideration the most important philosophers and themes that shaped Western philosophy from Augustine to Meister Eckhart. The main focus will be on Augustine, Boethius, Ps. Dionysius, Anselm of Canterbury, Bonaventure, Thomas Aquinas, John Duns Scotus, Ockham and Eckhart. Topics addressed include the patristic, the Carolingian Renaissance, Arabic and Jewish philosophers and their influence on Christian philosophy, Latin Aristotelianism and Scholasticism, the Anti-Aristotelians, Meister Eckhart, and mysticism.
