Study Abroad in Rome, Italy - Excursions

We want you to get the most out of your stay in Italy. Studying with Abroadco includes access to a complete program of immersion activities and excursions! Abroadco provides two full-day and two overnight excursions per semester and one full-day and one overnight for summer programs. Past Abroadco excursions have included the following destinations.

Day Trips (Total of Three per Term)

• Rome landmarks: Vatical, Palazzo Farnese, Domus Aurea, Pantheon, US Embassy, etc..
• Day Trip to Tivoli: Villas; or Day Trip to Perugia: Città della Pieve, Nestle factory, Deruta ceramic production.
• Day Trip to Le Marche wineries; or Visit to IKEA (business-related study trip).

Visit historic Venice, a magic city with streets made of the sea. Over and under bridges, through countless canals there is a never-ending amount of enchanting art and architecture to see. Make your way through the narrow and winding streets, discovering the small, intimate piazzas away from the tourist spots. Make sure not miss Piazza San Marco with its stunning basilica and famous square. Explore the many museums and churches that populate the city. And you’ll definitely have time to visit the islands of Murano, famous since the 13th century for its art glass. Witness resident artisans blowing and spinning their art, pick up a small souvenir piece of glass, and you may even have the opportunity to try your hand at glass blowing!

Sicily (Fall Semester, 3-Day Excursion)

A stay in Italy is not complete without a trip to Sicily. Explore the eastern coast of the island, visiting Catania, Taormina, Mt. Etna, and more. Throughout this region you will find the remains of Roman and Greek amphitheaters, temples, and theaters. And you can’t miss Italy’s most active volcano, Mt. Etna. Explore the steaming crater and enjoy the panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. And while in Italy, sample Sicilian pizza and the best gelato in the world!

Florence is one of the great artistic and cultural centers of the western world and is best known historically as the birthplace of the Renaissance. Today, 30% of the world’s more important works of art are in Florence. While in Florence, you will explore the famous cathedral, Santa Maria dei Fiori, take in many of the art museums, and see Michelangelo’s David. And don’t forget to take a stroll across Ponte Vecchio!

Next stop Siena. Within its 13th century walls, stroll through Il Campo, the shell-shaped brick square that is home to many events including semiannual horse races. Visit the civic museum and head over to Siena’s Gothic cathedral, one of a few fully Gothic cathedrals south of the Alps.

Mount Vesuvius, the ruins of the city of Pompeii, and pizza—how can you miss? Naples offers visitors a lively look at a southern Italian city—chaotic, loud, and friendly. But Naples offers even more. Naples’ historic center is considered the most varied architecturally in the world, with significant buildings dating between the 14th and 19th centuries. And don’t forget to walk along with waterfront and visit the Egg Castle! And while in Naples, you will visit the ruins of Pompeii, the city buried in volcanic ash in 79 AD. And after that visit, take a trip up to the Vesuvius’ crater and take a look in the only active volcano on mainland Europe. It’s a trip not be missed!

Bologna and Modena (Fall Semester, 3-Day Excursion)

In the heart of Italy, Bologna is renowned for its ancient university and its cuisine. Admire the 700-year old church porticos that line the avenues as you explore the city and its incredible collect of art. Make time to visit the university, founded in 1088 and Europe’s oldest. Sample some pasta with bolognese sauce. Then on to Modena, home to Luciano Pavarotti, Maseratti and Ferrari factories, and its famous balsamic vinegar. What could be more Italian than opera, sports cars, and food?
