This course will deal with Spanish literature produced during the XX century, and will be divided into six sections. The first section will be on literature from the end of the XIX century and beginning of the XX. The second and third will be on the avant-garde literature up until the Civil War. The fourth, fifth and sixth will study Spanish literature from the post-war period until the present day. With this orientation the students are expected to obtain a dynamic vision of Spanish literature, with which they can interconnect the knowledge they may already possess, or with that which they may possess in the future. Syllabus I. The beginnings of Literary Modern Age. 1. End of century crisis and new literature: general analysis. 2. End of century crisis and new poetry: from Antonio Machado to Juan Ramón Jiménez. 3. End of century crisis and new novel: from Unamuno and Azorín to Pío Baroja. 4. End of century crisis and new theatre: Valle-Inclán. II. The Modern Age and Literary Avant-garde. 5. The period between the wars and typology of the avant-garde modern age. 6. The essay modern age: Ortega y Gasset. 7. The poetic modern age: the poets of ’27. 8. The modern age in novel and prose: from Gabriel Miró to Ramón Gómez de la Serna. 9. The modern age in theatre: the plays of Federico García Lorca. III. Social crises and the Modern Age in crisis. 10. Literature between purity and revolution. 11. Literature during the civil war. IV. The post-war period and the re-humanizing process of Literature 12. Post-war and literature: the “triumphant literature”. Literature of the “interior exile”. Literature of exile: Francisco Ayala. 13. From existentialism to social realism in poetry: from Dámaso Alonso to Gabriel Celaya, Blas de Otero and José Hierro. The poets of the half century. 14. From existentialism to social realism in the novel: from Camilo José Cela and Miguel Delibes to the novelists of the half century. 15. From existentialism to social realism in the theatre: from Buero Vallejo to Alfonso Sastre. V. Royal Spain as opposed to Official Spain and literary renovation and experimentation. 16. Renovation and experimentation in poetry: experimental, culturist and intimist tendencies: from the “novísimos” to Antoñio Carvajal. 17. Renovation and experimentation in the novel: from Luis Martín Santos and Juan Bennet to Juan Goytisolo. 18. Renovation and experimentation in the theatre: from Fernando Arrabal and Francisco Nieva to the Independent Theatre Groups. VI. Literary Tendencies in present-day Spain 19. Tendencies in present-day poetry: from intimist aesthetics to the “poetry of experience”. 20. Tendencies of the present-day novel: from verbal alchemy to the recuperation of realism; from narrative memorialism to the historical novel; open conception of the novel. 21. Tendencies of present-day theatre: from realist theatre to the neo-absurd; festive and spectacular experimentation of Els Comediants and la Fura dels Baus. Activities Reading the literary works, attention and participation in class, compulsory piece of work, mid-term and final exam. Assessment Reading the literary work (20%), attention and participation in class (15%), compulsory piece of work (20%), theoretical and practical final exam (45%). Bibliography This will be given to the students at the beginning of the course.
The subject will cover Spanish Literature produced during the 20th-century, dividing the matter in six blocks. The first block will be dedicated to the literature of end of the 19th-century and the principles of the 20th. The second and third will contain vanguard literature until the civil war. The fourth, fifth and sixth will study Spanish literature from the postwar period to today. With this direction it is hoped that the students will obtain a dynamic vision of Spanish literature, by means of which they can interconnect the knowledge that they previously had, or that that they can have in the future.

La asignatura tratará la literatura española producida durante el siglo XX, dividiéndose la materia en seis bloques. El primer bloque se dedicará a la literatura de finales del XIX y principios del XX. El segundo y tercero, contendrán la literatura de vanguardia hasta la guerra civil. El cuarto, quinto y sexto, estudiarán la literatura española desde la posguerra hasta hoy. Con esta orientación se pretende que los alumnos obtengan una visión dinámica de la literatura española, mediante la cual puedan interconectar los conocimientos que sobre ella posean previamente, o los que puedan poseer en el futuro.
