Summary

This course will deal with Spanish literature produced during the XVIII and XIV centuries, in two sections focused comparatively with respect to the same tendencies in other countries. The first section will be on the characteristics the Age of Enlightenment presented in Spain and the continuity of a type of Baroque literature coexisting with Enlightenment literature. The second block will be focused on 19th century literature in its two main lines, romanticism and realism. With this orientation the students are expected to obtain a dynamic vision of Spanish literature, with which they can interconnect the knowledge they may already possess, or with that which they may possess in the future.

3. Enlightenment poetry. Juan Meléndez Valdés. La Academia del Buen Gusto in Madrid.
4. The theatre of the Enlightenment. García de la Huerta. Moratín.
5. Introduction to the XIV century. Political, social, cultural and economic aspects. Period of great war crisis (1808-1843). The era of Spain under Isabella and the revolution (1843-1875). The restoration period (1875-1902).
6. Introduction to Romanticism. French, German and English Romanticism.
7. Romanticism in Spain.
8. Common themes in Spanish and European Romanticism.
9. Prose in the XIX century. Romantic prose. Literary criticism in the press (Larra). Genre of local customs and manners (Mesonero Romanos, Estebánez Calderón). Historical novel (Enrique Gil y Carrasco). Doctrinal prose.
10. Romantic theatre. Duque de Rivas, Zorrilla, Hartzenbuch.
11. Romantic poetry. Espronceda, Bécquer, and Rosalía de Castro.
12. Realism and Naturalism. Realism in poetry (Campoamor, Núñez de Arce, Gabriel and Galán). The realist novel (Juan Valera, L.Alas Clarín, B. Perez Galdós.
13. Modernism. The term “Modernism”. Ruben Darío.

1. Introduction

The course will cover Spanish Literature produced during the 18th- and 19th-centuries, in two focused blocks of comparative form with respect to the same tendencies in other countries. The first block will be dedicated to the peculiarities that illustration presented in Spain and to the survival of a type of coexisting Baroque literature. The second block will be dedicated to "decimonónica" in its two main lines, romantic and realistic literature. In this direction students will obtain a dynamic vision of Spanish literature, by means of which they can interconnect the knowledge that they previously had, or those that can have in the future.

1. Introducción

La asignatura tratará la literatura española producida durante los siglos XVIII y XIX, en dos bloques enfocados de forma comparativa respecto a las mismas tendencias en otros países. El primer bloque se dedicará a las peculiaridades que la Ilustración presentó en España y a la pervivencia de un tipo de literatura barroca coexistente con la literature ilustrada. El segundo bloque estará dedicado a la literatura decimonónica en sus dos líneas principales, romántica y realista. Con esta orientación se pretende que los alumnos obtengan una visión dinámica de la literatura española, mediante la cual puedan interconectar los conocimientos que sobre ella posean previamente, o los que puedan poseer en el futuro.
