This course is offered only during the fall semester.

I. Introduction

Cinema consists of the popular artistic manifestation of the 20th century. Its expressive strengths and narrative capacities have converted to the most important ways to touch the sensibility of modern spectators. In the case of Spanish cinema, the cinematographic productions present a splendid possibility to get closer to the knowledge of reality of this century and country by two aspects: historical documents and also by esthetic expressions. Significant elements to investigate -the objective reality, critical attitude, ideological postulates and artistic creativity –the development and evolution of Spanish cinema and the complexities that go along with it.

II. Program

1. The beginnings of Spanish film (1896-1930)
   • The entertainment culture and its relationship to the theater
   • Casting and costumes as a form of expression
   • The plentitude of silent film: Benito Perojo and Florian Rey
   • The artistic vanguard and cinematographer: Luis Buñel
2. Voiced films, the Republic and Civil War (1930-1939)
   • The arrival of voiced film
   • Film during the Republic era
   • The cinematographic productions of the two sides of the war
3. Film during the Franco autarchy (1939-1950)
   • Film used as ideological propaganda
   • Control mechanisms
4. The renovation of Spanish film in the dictatorship (1951-1975)
   • The international commencement and film
   • The first achievements: Luis Garcia Berlanga and Juan Antonio Bardem
   • The international image of a new type of cinema: Carlos Saura
   • The return of Luis Buñel
   • The definite development of Spanish cinema post-Franco
5. Spanish cinema of the democracy (1975-1998)
   • The new politics of cinematography and the end of censorship
   • The historical revision of the past since the criticized liberty
   • International competence: free market or protectionism
   • Spanish cinema: art and industry
   • Diverse genres and the international irradiation

III. Activities

Classes will be given by the professor on the assigned schedule for the university. This class is characterized as a theory-practical class, along with the viewing and commenting on important Spanish films.

It is important to become familiar with the….in the Center or Modern Language, also the organizing and participation are in cycles and relative seminars to this topic. It is also important that there will be a visit to an exposition or movie library relating to Spanish cinema.

IV. Evaluation

The course evaluation is carried out as so -half is the final exam and the rest is work done by the students; especially the attitude before the continuous development of teachings.

1. Introducción

El cine constituye la manifestación artística más popular del siglo XX. Su fuerza expresiva y su capacidad narrativa lo han convertido en el medio más importante para conmover la sensibilidad del espectador moderno. En el caso español, la producción cinematográfica se nos presenta como una espléndida posibilidad para acercarnos al conocimiento de la realidad de nuestro país en nuestra centuria, desde dos de las vertientes más interesantes, como documento histórico y también como expresión estética. De esta manera, realidad objetiva, actitud crítica, postulados ideológicos y creatividad artística, etc. Son elementos a tratar e investigar en el desarrollo de este curso, planteado desde una evolución temporal que va desde los orígenes a la complejidad de la creación cinematográfica española en la actualidad.

1. Los comienzos del cine español (1896-1930).
   • La cultura del entretenimiento popular y la relación con el teatro
   • El casticismo y el costumbrismo como formas de expresión
   • Plenitud del cine mudo: Benito Perojo y Florián Rey.
   • La vanguardia artística y cinematográfica: Luís Buñel
2. El cine sonoro, la República y la Guerra Civil (1930-1939)
   • La llegada del sonoro
   • El cine en la época de la República
   • La producción cinematográfica en los dos bandos de la Guerra
3. El cine en el período de la autarquía Franquista (1939-1950)
   • El cine como propaganda ideológica
   • Los mecanismos de control
4. La renovación del cine español en la dictadura (1951-1975)
   • La apertura internacional y el cine
   • Los primeros logros. Luís García Berlanga y Juan Antonio Bardem
   • La imagen internacional de un nuevo cine. Carlos Saura
   • El retorno de Luís Buñel
   • El definitivo desarrollo del cine español en el tardofranquismo
5. El cine español de la democracia (1975-1998)
   • La nueva política cinematográfica y el fin de la censura
   • La revisión histórica del pasado desde la libertad crítica
   • La competencia internacional. Proteccionismo o libre mercado
   • El cine español, arte e industria
   • La diversidad de los géneros y la irradiación internacional.

Actividades

Las clases se impartirán por el profesor en el horario asignado por el centro. El carácter del curso es teórico-práctico, complementándose las explicaciones en el aula con la proyección y comentario de películas importantes del cine español.

Para ello es importante la familiarización con los fondos videográficos del Centro de Lenguas Modernas, así como la organización y participación en ciclos y seminarios relativos a est tema. Igualmente es interesante la realización de alguna visita a alguna filmoteca o exposición sobre el cine español.

Evaluación

La evaluación del curso se llevará a cabo por medio de una prueba final, a la que se suma la realización de trabajos por parte de los alumnos, así como la actitud ante el desarrollo continuado de la docencia.
