Explores the impact of life in France on American artists, introducing students both to the nearly mythic appeal of French culture for Americans and to the dark side of expatriate experience. Students discover how art buyers, collectors, and artists have been attracted to French artistic models since the Ancien Régime. Students follow the steps of Thomas Jefferson and Gertrude Stein through Paris, and look at works of Mary Cassatt, Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent, and James Whistler.
