This class is a 3hr weekly lecture and 1hr/wk film showing
To uncover the current tendencies of French cinema
The course will concentrate on the creation of contemporary cinematography (1995-2007) and to observe the treatment of recurring themes. We will try to define a modern style : what are the visual particularities of the cinema?We will watch in class a minimum of two films for each director.The directors are grouped by theme : feminist cinema, cinema "beur", realist cinema, social cinema, popular comedies, etc.Each theme will permit us to raise questions about the film industry and French contemporary society.Students are strongly encouraged to regularly go to the movie theater and must write a short critique of the film.
Other films, mandatory or optional, will be available on the course's internet site or can be viewed in the film classrooms, depending on the topic and time.
Students will be graded according to the following scale:Attendance and active participation 40%Oral Film Critique 20%Written Analysis 20%Written critique of a film beyond the program 20%
