This class is a 3hr weekly lecture and 1hr/wk film showing

Objectives

To uncover the current tendencies of French cinema

• Themes, schools, movements
  
• Discover in depth the works and their authors
  
• Observe and methodically describe a film
  
• Construct, organize and write a film analysis
  
• Prepare an oral presentation about a university-level subject
  
• Prepare an academic paper (8-10 pages)
  

Program

The course will concentrate on the creation of contemporary cinematography (1995-2007) and to observe the treatment of recurring themes. We will try to define a modern style : what are the visual particularities of the cinema?
We will watch in class a minimum of two films for each director.
The directors are grouped by theme : feminist cinema, cinema "beur", realist cinema, social cinema, popular comedies, etc.
Each theme will permit us to raise questions about the film industry and French contemporary society.
Students are strongly encouraged to regularly go to the movie theater and must write a short critique of the film.

Other films, mandatory or optional, will be available on the course's internet site or can be viewed in the film classrooms, depending on the topic and time.

Grading

Students will be graded according to the following scale:
Attendance and active participation 40%
Oral Film Critique 20%
Written Analysis 20%
Written critique of a film beyond the program 20%

Dégager les grandes tendances actuelles du cinéma français

• (thèmes, écoles..)
  
• Découvrir en profondeur les œuvres et leurs auteurs
  
• Observer et décrire méthodiquement un film
  
• Construire, organiser et rédiger une analyse filmique
  
• S'entraîner à la prise de parole sur un sujet universitaire
  
• S'entraîner à une rédaction universitaire longue (8-10 pages)
  

Programme

• Le cours propose de se concentrer sur la création cinématographique contemporaine (1995-2007) et d'y observer le traitement de thèmes récursifs Nous chercherons également à définir une modernité stylistique : quelles sont les particularités visuelles de ce cinéma ?
  
• Nous regarderons en cours au moins deux films par réalisateurs.
  
• Les réalisateurs sont groupés par approches thématiques : cinéma de femmes, cinéma « beur » cinéma réaliste, cinéma social, comédies populaires etc...
  
• Chaque thème permettra de soulever des questions relatives au cinéma et à la société français contemporaine.
  
• Les étudiants sont fortement encouragés à aller régulièrement au cinéma et devront rédiger une courte critique d'un film hors-programme.

Les notes seront calculées selon le barème suivant :
Présence et participation active en cours : 40%
Critique de film (orale) : 20%
Analyse (écrite) : 20%
Critique de film hors programme (écrite) : 20%
