Explores the contributions of French culture to the history of Western music from the Troubadours and Trouvères of the Middle Ages to the music of the Baroque era. Examines French styles and currents in artistic creation, including composers such as Pérotin, Josquin des Prez, Lully, and Rameau. Students will acquire a concrete working knowledge of the specificities of French repertory through audio excerpts, keyboard demonstrations, and concert performances. Integrated into the class are on-site visits and concert attendance in monuments that are linked with the history of Paris as a world music capital. Includes a special visit to the Château de Versailles for the annual Grandes Eaux Musicales spectacular.
