This course presents concepts such as "person" and "identity" and studies the relation of group dynamics to gender, class, and culture. Analyzes Goffman's study of self-presentation and examines how patterns of communications relate to specific settings. Students will study exchange, interpersonal communication, and the relationship of self to groups' conceptions of ethics, and how changes in the idea of the self relate to new media and technology.
