Objectives

• Discover the artistic movements and the major leading artists in the field of Art in France and Europe during the last two decades of 19th Century.
  
• Learn to examine, analyze and understand a work of modern art while placing it in the artistic, historic and socio-cultural context of the era.
  

Program:

• The artistic landscape in France from the beginning of the 1880s.
  
  • Academic art and the importance of Puvis of Chavannes.
    
  • Edouard Manet, and the last expositions of the impressionist group
    
  • Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissaro after the Impressionism.
    
• From Post-Impressionism to Art Nouveau: the major precursors of art from the 20th Century. 
  
  • The Neo-Impressionists: Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, Henri Edmond Cross, Camille Pissarro...
    
  • The Japanese influence 
    
  • Vincent Gauguin and Symbolism: the Pont-Aven in Tahiti, Synthetism and Primitivism
    
  • The Nabis (Paul Sérusier, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Maurice Denis...)
    
  • Paul Cézanne, "The primitive of the New Times" and also Gustave Moreaux, Odilon Redon, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec, Auguste Rodin, Camille Claudel, Gustav Klimt, Edward Munch, James Ensor.
