Full Description

This course explores the origins of modernism, beginning with the influential work of Nicolas Poussin and ending with the late work of the Impressionists and their followers. Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Symbolism will be studied in depth. Focusing on French art produced during the 19th century, artistic exchanges with England, Germany, Italy, and the United States during that period will also be explored. Lectures, in-class writing assignments and class discussions will be supplemented by museum visits allowing students to discover first-hand the art of this important period of artistic achievement. Students will be responsible for museum entrance fees.
