Studies the dominant literary mode of the 19th century in France and Britain: the realist novel. Reading list includes works by Defoe, Richardson, Dickens, Eliot, the Brontës, Balzac, Flaubert, Zola, and James. Relates the effect of realism to surrounding sociological, historical, and psychological writings, and analyzes the desires - encoded in the novel form - to escape and surpass sociology, history, and psychology.
