The art of three of the greatest painters of seventeenth-century Europe is the subject of this course. The masters selected are recognized as the leaders of the Flemish, Dutch and Spanish schools of painting in their day, and their legacy to Western art is enormous. For each, the relations to established local tradition, and to great contemporaries working close by, will be examined, as well as the responses to new ideas coming from abroad, notably from Italy. The accomplishment of each painter will be investigated, over the whole range of categories found in Baroque pictorial art, with sacred and profane works satisfying the varied demands of patronage of courts, religious institutions and the bourgeoisie. The role of drawings and prints in the oeuvre of each master will be examined. A study trip to Madrid is organized as an integral part of the course.
Study trip planned to Madrid 22-25 Nov. (est. cost 450 euros)
