Summary

Examines three thematic categories: medieval women as artists; women as patrons, owners, collectors, and viewers of art in the Middle Ages; and representations of women in medieval art. Representations from largescale Biblical narratives to small ivory caskets depicting scenes of courtly love. The course is necessarily interdisciplinary, touching upon artwork related to important female historical figures, composers, and writers such as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Hildegard of Bingen, and Christine de Pisan. Readings will also include recent critical literature about feminism, gender, and the body.
